Magic Jack

It is always great when you can find new technology that saves you money. That is what MagicJack can do. Save you lots of money. No more home phone bill.

The Magic Jack is a device that plugs into any USB port on your computer. There is a standard phone jack on one end of it that you can plug a typical phone into. Once you plug your Magic Jack into your computer the software for it will install. You have to register with Magic Jack and you can select a phone number with a local area code. Magic Jack uses your DSL or Cable Internet connection to route your phone calls over the internet.

Your calls with Magic Jack are free to the U.S, Canada, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands and you are not charged for incoming calls. You can use a standard phone plugged into the Magic Jack or you can use a headset plugged into your PC which does not even require a phone at all. There is even a plugin you can download that allows you to dial the phone directly from your Outlook Contacts.

I have had my Magic Jack for a few weeks and love it. You can buy it at Radio Shack for about $40. Purchase includes the first year of service. Additional years are $19.95 each. I bought mine online at I have since seen offers for as little as $60 to extend to five years of service. I have now turned off my $40+ per month land line.

One important note is that the Magic Jack has a disclaimer about 911 service. It has some limited 911 functionality and may not work correctly in some areas. You will have to test yours to see how it works in your area.
