Read all about Computer Repair in Houston. The most common complaint we hear about computers is that they just run too slow! Most of the time it is not really the computer's fault. The poor thing is working as hard as it can to keep up with all the things it is being told to do. The problem is usually that it is not maintained very well and it has too many programs all running at once.
So, what to do when your computer is running too slow? Here is a list of things that will really help. We will assume that you are running Windows XP, though this process is similar for Windows 95, 98, ME & 2000.
1. Start by checking the hard drive for any errors. Go to My Computer, then right-click on the C: drive and click properties. The property sheet for the hard drive will open. Go to the Tools tab and click the Check Now button. Now check both the check boxes and click the Start button. After this you will see a message that says the check can not run now and it will ask if you want to run it the next time the computer reboots. Just click Yes, then restart the computer. When the computer boots up, the disk check will run for 30 - 60 minutes.
2. Clean up unnecessary background processes. There are often programs running on your computer every time you start it that you do not even use. Click on Start, then Run, then enter MSCONFIG and hit enter. Click on the Startup tab and uncheck programs that you do not recognize. They can always be checked again later if you decide you need them back. When you are done, click OK and you will be asked to restart. Go ahead.
3. Defragment the hard drive. Click Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools then Disk Defragmenter. Now click the Defragment button and let it run until it says it is done.
These tasks will not take you long to complete and can make a tremendous difference in your computer's performance. As always, if you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact me.
