Have you ever been away from home and wished you had a phone number or other information that is stored on your computer there? What if you could see your home PC's screen and control it's mouse and keyboard from anywhere you can find an Internet connection? What if it was absolutely free?
Remote control of a PC is not a brand new idea. Products like PC Anywhere and Reach Out have done it for years, but they were typically a little slow and frustrating to use. More recently, we've seen web based products like GoToMyPC and WebEx that do a much better job, but these cost money.
I've used an alternative tool for a year or so now. It's called LogMeIn and it's free. It's from a company called 3AM Labs. They have other paid for products with more bells and whistles, but for basic remote control, you can't beat their LogMeIn Free product.
Here's how to get started. Open a web browser and go to http://logmein.com. Click on "Create an account" in the upper right corner. On the next screen, be sure to select "sign up" next to "LogMeIn Free". Creating your account is really simple. You will need to provide your email address and a password. You will be sent an email with a link to click to confirm your account.
Login to your account and click on "My Computers". Click the "Add Computer" link and step through the installation of LogMeIn software onto your computer. You need to do this at the computer that you want to remote control. You can also do this at several PCs if you want to control more than just one.
Now from any PC with an Internet connection you can login to your LogMeIn account and remote control the computers in your "My Computers" list. Simply click on "My Computers", then on the computer you want to control. You'll have to login to that computer and click on the "Go" button under Remote Control.
LogMeIn will work through your router at home and is simple to setup. It can be a great tool for working from home or accessing information while traveling. Not bad for FREE!
